Secrets of Circles

March 17th to September 9th 2012

Thanks to generous support from the community, the SEE Science Center will host the traveling exhibition Secrets of Circles.

Circles are everywhere!  Why?  Discover the secret!  This highly interactive 2000 sq. ft. exhibition features 17 exhibits designed to inspire questions and encourage investigation. Explore the math, science, engineering and culture of circles.  Discover what makes the circle the best shape for both pizzas and car wheels, or why bubbles, the sun and the iris of your eye are all circles.

Join us at SEE for Circles in the Community events!
Tuesday July 13st 12:00 to 1:00 pm See how Studio 550 makes circles with pottery. Monica Leap will demonstrate how to throw a pot on a wheel. Visitors may even get to get their hands dirty. "As a studio potter and dancer, art has become the way I create community." Studio 550 has classes, programs and other opportunities for children and adults of all ages and abilities. Learn more at http://www.550arts.com/

In the exhibition preschoolers can explore circular objects like coconuts, oranges, and the Vietnamese round boat.  Older children can contemplate the engineering and physical advantage of circles to solve problems, such as pulling heavy loads or providing architectural support.  Adults may even learn a thing or two about different compass designs or the variety of shapes generated by rotating circles around an axis!  Secrets of Circles was designed to intrigue a wide range of ages, as well as visitors from different backgrounds.   All of the exhibit signage is tri-lingual, (English, Spanish, and Vietnamese) and spaces are wheelchair accessible.

Secrets of Circles was conceived of and created by Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose.  It was made possible with major funding from the National Science Foundation and corporate support from KPMG, Fujitsu Computer Products of America and Marvell Semiconductor.

The exhibit is brought to the SEE Science Center with local support from RiverStone Resources, a silver partner, Burndy a bronze partner and UNH Manchester, Russell Auto Inc., 900 Degrees Pizzeria and Dyna Tune,  copper level partners.  SEE Science Center Member families and individuals from the community have also contributed to funding this exhibit. We are continuing to raise funds for the remainder of the funds required for this exhibit. Please consider a donation.

Secrets of Circles is included with regular admission to the SEE Science Center.
